14 Comments I Hate What YDE Has Become

Article written by the awesome Sean Lloyd on the 19 Jul 2010

I remember when YDE started, we all saw so much potential in it. A place where designers with talent but limited resources could showcase their work.

And now look at it…a dreary place with white lighting, absolutely no atmosphere or customer experience, another sell out, another part of the corporate world, a place no person with street style would actually shop.

A place full of polyester, another fake world designed to drain your wallet and make you look like shit. A place where the actual soul of the fashion industry is non existent. A place where you surely cannot be proud of our young designers? A place where the clothes shrink, a place where the ‘large’ label actually means ‘midget’

To me fashion should have a soul and a feeling, and your clothing should reflect your lifestyle, dreams and aspirations. Clothing should grow with you, age with you, party with you and be one with you. I don’t see this at YDE. I see it as the bubblegum of the clothing world. Something you chew a few times, then spit it out and watch someone else walk all over it. I have pieces of clothing in my wardrobe that I absolutely love, jeans that are essentially me, jackets that I love, items of clothing that possess wear marks from my life. Items of clothing that share my past and remind me of good times. Items of clothing that people recognize me by…maybe I’m too passionate about clothing and the way it should be worn. I believe in having a small selection of top quality clothes that you wear until you lose them or break them. Clothing that you wear until it falls off you. Clothing that becomes synonymous with you. I like ‘real’ clothing too…leather, organic cotton, hemp. The real quality stuff.

I walk into YDE and feel ashamed that this is a representation of our young designers. It’s ugly, it’s made of crap materials, the cuts are horrendous, everything is too small and it’s common.

If YDE were in London, the chavs would have an absolute field day buying their shiny polyester tracksuit tops there. Because that’s what it is…a cheap showcase of fake materials with no style and passion. I don’t put a hand to a piece of YDE clothing and feel passion. I don’t look at it and see beauty. I don’t try it on and feel awesome about myself.

I hate the way it is so expensive for young designers to showcase their work, I hate the clinical feel of the stores, I hate the clothing, I hate what the brand has become. I just hate YDE altogether, and yet it did have potential at one stage.

It seems the dream of Paul Simon is just another one skewed and butchered by corporate governance.

Awesome.

Haha I know exactly what you mean..When I first moved here, everyone was telling me to hit this place up for its amazing fashion..It’s nothing but a polyester palace, and any of the clothes could be in any cheap London high street shop, but for half the price too. Such a shame that a shop that could do so much for local up-and-coming designers is wasting its potential. Maybe someone will see your post and get back to the drawing board. Here’s hoping!

Ja I don't see things changing too much, it's owned by Truworths and I bet the last thing shareholders are worried about is a passion for clothing. They have a passion for money spinning though :)

But the market has completely changed since YDE started and with social media now and with boutique markets opening up, we can have access to boutique fashion.

My main problem is that when faced with a choice of clothing from a shop or from an individual designer, I'd rather go for the shops clothing. I know that a R1100 jacket from Country Road is going to last a long time, whereas a R1000 jacket from a young designer may or may not last, and I don't have guarantees and can't return it. Plus young designers clothing needs to be expensive still because they make such limited quantities and still need to make a living.

So it's a tricky situation that fashion designers find themselves in...

Mr Lloyd…. Although I tend to agree with a lot of your valid, harsh comments that you have made above. I’m willing to bet money on the fact that my R800 virtual leather jacket from YDE is going to last longer than your genuine leather one. Oh wait…. My jackets already close to 8 months old and is still 100% vs. Your jacket which is how old? And where did it spend the whole of last week getting fixed? Ya… Thought so :) people just have to know which designers to buy from at YDE. Some of the clothing is good quality!

Ja ja ja! My next jacket will be from Diesel though once JMF Auctions starts, ha ha :) I think the guys clothing is really shit though...the girls isn't too bad, but the guys stuff is terrible. It's not really cutting edge or pushing new boundaries, it's the same stuff every year, every season. But I don't need to shop too much, I have jeans, white v-necks are R70 at Woolworths and I'm sorted!

I have a R700 vouvher that I got for my birthday, went to the V&A and Cavendish stores today….there is FUCKALL that I want.

Plus I know it’s just going to break or shrink three sizes after the first wash.

Due the shrinkage is hectic! And you need to buy XXL because it's made for midgets. That's a kak birthday voucher to get, I won't lie...trade it for drugs in the storage room

Ya, I thought i had freakishly long and thick arms. Turns out all their shirts are made for tik adicts, AIDS victims or cross dressing school girls.

BOOM!

I remember my school days, scouting out the YDE for “designer” pieces. Thought we were so cool, no in my twenties I have come to despise all these fast fashion cheap ass crap brands, if a designer wants to be recognised as a designer, YDE is not for you. We have an organic clothing store, showcasing local and international designs that is kind to the environment and the workers, and actually made to fit normal people. Will never go back to polyesters and nylons. It’s an offense to you and nature. Polyester is petroleum derived which means you are wearing fossil fuels, what the …. Would love to see all these people who hate what fashion has become to buy as they talk, and not just complain, but run to the mall for the next clearance sale.

Hi Irene

Where abouts is your organic clothing store? Sounds very interesting, I refuse to wear any polyester!

Not so much from an environmental point of view, I think we’re all to blame as every minute of our day relies on fossil fuel. However, if I can find organic clothing I do buy it, and most of my Woolworths t-shirts are now 100% organic. I just really hate the feel of polyester and it makes me reeeeeally static!

The feel of organic cotton and hemp is far superior to polyester, and at least I know if it lands up in the environment, it’s not going to do any harm, provided the dyes etc are natural.

Kind regards

Sean

i couldn’t agree with u more… looking for a way foward. I’m an upcoming designer and I thought YDE is where I would start show casing my label, untill I recently paid YDE a visit that is.
Which other places are there for young designers?

Thanx

I don’t think YDE should be getting so much grief, they have great clothes and I wear them often n& everyone always compliments how awesome my clothes are…I think young designers get ample exposure at YDE and the prices may be high but I really prefer quality over quantity…#justsaying
