A while back I broke out into a terrible rash from Piz Buin due to the inclusion of oxybenzone in their formulation. Since then I’ve switched to Island Tribe which is better because I don’t break into a rash, but still a chemical sunscreen. This summer I’ll be trying out some natural sunscreens. I don’t want to be the nerd covered in white cream on the beach, but I’d like to test out some of the newer sunscreens that use zinc and titanium dioxide as a barrier protector.
Badger seems to be one of the popular sunscreens and is available at Wellness Warehouse as well as online at Faithful To Nature. It is however very expensive at R200 for 87ml’s, but can we actually put a price on health?
The other brand I’ve found is called Tropical Sands by Mexitan and also uses titanium and zinc dioxide as a barrier protector.
You can order online and they do ship to South Africa. These are some of the statements on their website:
Chemical-Free And PABA-Free Formulas
No Nanoparticles Or Mineral Oil
No Chemical Fragrances Or Preservatives
No Animal Testing And Safe For Kids & Pets
Made In The USA And Highly Rated By EWG!
Rated #1 Reef-Friendly Sunscreen By Tropical Snorkeling Website!
Named “Preferred Biodegradable Sunscreen” By Yucatan Mexico Officials
Considered “Top Eco-Friendly Sunscreen” For Use At Mayan Ruins In Central America.
I can’t fond the sources for those statements, but it’s common sense that it is highly preferable for yourself and the environment to use a natural sunscreen. National Geographic even has an article stating that sunscreen from people swimming is killing off coral reefs in the world (HERE)
But now all this talk of sunscreens bores me because you know that I’m a bronzed God! A real Mayan hero! A Greek war figure! Chiselled from stone! A golden hue! Because I’m such a naughty boy, this is all I will be wearing this summer (Apart from my banana hammock/euro swimming trunks):
You see that in the ingredients, lanolin. Like sheep’s wool!
Did you see that on the label, ‘The secret of Acapulco’ You know what Acapulco means? We’re going loco!
The Mexitan dark tanning oil will render me like this:
Fabio: SMOULDERING (He’s so hot right now)
