I’m just going to, from the start, tell you that the new Carolina Herrera For Men is something awesome! I found one of those small samples lying around the house, I think it may have come with my GQ. Normally I tend to avoid these samples as I have had some bad experiences where I smell horrendous and people avoid me all day.
One of the reasons why I chose to sample this because I had just watched Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. So I was thinking of shagging.
Yeah baby, let’s shag!
Sorry about that.
So I was think along the lines of that, and Shaggy came to mind. Shaggy singing ‘Oh Carolina’, and bang, all these little intricate processes in my brain came together to signal to me that this was a sign that I should indeed spray the new Carolina Herrera on.
Now I’m not one of those preppy and pretentious people who sits at a restaurant, orders wine, smells it, swirls it, then tastes and looks at the waiter and says ‘Do you think the heightened temperature range of the clays during the solstice have something to do with this being more…dry? Because I can’t possibly drink this’ And then you go and be a complete pretentious prick and throw in words like ‘terroir’ and whatever else is cool.
So on that note, I’m not a person who smells a fragrance and says ‘Well the juniper berry top note really accentuates that developing note of hummus.’
I taste wine and smell fragrances in the same fashion…if they make me feel good, I’ll buy them. If they make me smile and think ‘Damn, this is awesome’ then I’ll buy them. I can’t tell you to go out and buy this fragrance, because fragrances develop differently on people. I’m not going to go into detail here because I naturally assume you know how fragrances work, how to try them and buy them etc. If you don’t know, click HERE for some sound advice.
What I can tell you though is that this is a phenomenal fragrance and just smelling it on myself makes me feel as if I can take over the world (Which I probably can…let’s be honest) And that’s the thing with fragrances, if you try them and wear them the entire day and you come off the back end of the day feeling awesome because you smell good, you’re going to have more confidence. Don’t buy something because it is advertised, or because a mate of yours wears it. Don’t buy it for the image the adverts portray.
Buy a fragrance because of how it makes you feel. If you smell good, look good and feel good, then there is nothing that can stop you.
You’re already half way to taking over the world then. So go on and try the new Carolina Herrera For Men, it is quite something.
Read More Add a CommentI sometimes think of ideas and suddenly I’m all crazy and going ‘This will change the world!’ and then I put some thought and work into them and realise that I was just getting a bit overly excited. And then that wave of depression hits, and I think ‘Well that was it, that was my big idea and now it’s gone’
The key thing with anything in life is that you need to obviously keep motivated, even in knowing that your last idea may not have worked. Sometimes thoughts come quickly, and suddenly a few thoughts merge into an idea. You put this idea into place which takes a bit of work. And it could be that idea that will make you wealthy or change the world. Both if you’re lucky.
On that note, this is what you need to know:

I was having an AWESOME time reading the Sunday Times yesterday, specifically for the things Michelle McLean can’t live without. Mind boggling.
Anyway the main reason I bought The Sunday Times was because Keith Richards was mentioned, and that reminded me that the greatest autobiography ever is about to be released! Keith Richards has lived a life of excess and because that’s what you’re all here for, I thought it very important to make a mention of this fact. Look, in South Africa we’re always a little behind everyone else and the book will only be released a bit later in South Africa. But never fear Captain Jack! Amazon.com are taking pre-orders, and according to them, Keith Richards autobiography is arriving tomorrow! Click below to order it safely online on Amazon.com and get it before anyone else!
I honestly cannot believe I have lived long enough to see this autobiography. It’s like Scar Tissue but no doubt 1000 times more hedonistic and excessive and wild and decadent.

Read More Add a CommentI’m not extravagant by any means and I truly, truly don’t care about labels. The reason why I’ll sometimes wear brand clothing is purely for quality purposes. And this is the main reason why I won’t shop at YDE because I refuse to wear clothing that is made for midgets. And nothing is cotton, it’s all polyester ensuring that when I’m standing in a club and someone lights a cigarette, I’m going to go up in flames, and die wearing the ugliest shirt of my life. Which is not how I want to go.
Anyway I always speak of Nudie Jeans as if they’re a child (I could not love a human baby as much as these denims) because I dig them so much. In fact, you’d have to do something pretty special to get me to wear any other denim brand. You’d literally have to offer me a whole shit ton of money.
Why I dig Nudies:
My Nudies…showing subtle wear, but still need loads more time to be worn in
A pair of Dry Broken Twill, exactly the same as above, just worn in. 1 year 6 months before their first wash. Awesome. (Via)
We love jeans, a passion we share with everyone who mourns a pair of worn out jeans as a close friend. Jeans share the same soul and attitude as music. The inspiration springs from the same dreams. As a true jeans brand we are not looking for the short-term trends. The inspiration is far from glamour and catwalks. The collection is tight, like a rock band, reflecting the feeling of everyday life.
Design goes beyond creating just a product that serves to fulfil a need or a function. The philosophy of Nudie jeans is to become part of your dreams. Jeans have a natural built-in dream and attitude.
Nudie will stay true to jeans and all about jeans.
Nudie is the ”naked truth about denim”. Denim has the ability to age beautifully – formed by its user into a second skin, naked and personal. The longer it lives the more character it gets. The indigo is a living colour that fades and gives the denim its character. The more you wear your jeans the more beautiful they get. Jeans are more than just a piece of clothing.
I’ve always had a love affair with denim, and my first pair were Levi’s (HORROR), but they carry my entire high school career in them. These are them:
Falling over in Green Man. Running to Billy The Bums for girls. Doing Tequila Slammers at Late Edition. Sleeping on the bench in the garden. Knocking hubbly coal onto them on the patio. Finishing matric. Failing my drivers licence. Passing my drivers licence. Going to college. Failing at college. Passing at college. Meeting new friends. Saying our farewells to friends that passed on. Going to plett. Going to Hermanus. Waking up in a place you can’t remember going to sleep at. Listening to new music, finding music that changes your life. Clubs, pubs, cars. My Levi’s were there at all these times and they carry the marks of a youth well drunk. My Levi’s were slightly faded when I bought them, but most of the wear and tear was purely from using them, day in and day out until they started to fall off me. Literally until they started to tear off of me.
Dry Denim is pure, unwashed denim that you need to wear in yourself and it’s not for everyone. It’s for the purists, the freaks, the passionate.
And I don’t expect you to be any of that, but if you are…welcome to the club.
Read More Add a CommentFor today we’re going to look at a video on surf photography. And this all translates into doing something you’re passionate about. In life, and work, you can get knocked down thousands of times doing what you love…cyclists crash. Athletes hit the wall. People in business lose money doing what they love. Bloggers do it for free. They get slated. But we love it.
People fail, even at things they’re passionate about. But they pick themselves back up and keep on doing what they love, learning along the way. And a lot of the time when you’re doing something that you’re passionate about, this translates into a good income. But even if it doesn’t, you can go to bed at the end of the day happy, knowing that you’ve done what you love and what makes you happy. And when you’re happy and kept busy with a passion of yours, you don’t need money to try and buy you happiness:
DARK SIDE OF THE LENS from Astray Films on Vimeo.
I never want to take this for granted so I try and keep motivation simple, real, positive. If I only scrape a living, at least its a living worth scraping. If there’s no future in it, at least it’s a present worth remembering.
For everything that brought us to that point on earth at that moment in time, to do something worth remembering, with a photograph, or a scar. I feel genuinely lucky to hand on heart say I love doing what I do and that I may never be a rich man. If I live long enough I certainly have a tale or two for the nephews…and I dig the thought of that.
Amazing. Inspiring.
Have a great day.
Read More Add a CommentSo there is still this whole debate going on, well not so much at the moment, but it always ignites at times of awards and stuff like that. While I’m not a fan of random advertising all over the place, I don’t mind if blogs have advertising or promote certain brands. Look, I had a dig at Cape Town Girl in THIS post. But to those of you who know me, you’ll know that I was just clowning around. Life doesn’t have to be so dull, we’re not all accountants and mathematicians!
But to people who seriously take this whole advertising thing seriously and call it ‘brand whoring’ and selling out, are just delusional.
Sure, if I was paying R100 per month to read a blog and I knew there were 25000 readers, and there were still ads all over the place, I’d know they were just greedy for money. The fact is, you don’t pay to read blogs. You don’t pay to read Dan, Seth, MyCityByNight and all the rest of the guys and girls. So you have nothing to complain about.
When last did you work for free?
Surely you taking a salary makes you a sell out? Get yourself together man, if you’re so passionate about your work, you should work for free, surely? According to the way people judge blogs, no one should take a salary at the end of the month.
I do feel like blogs such as Watkykjy have an insane amount if random and untargeted adverts that mean nothing to me, while 2oceansvibe and the like have an actual interest in the brands and products being pushed. And to me that’s the difference. I use Mantality.co.za regularly and I love the concept and I believe in them and trust them. I use Amazon.com, I use Obox for my WordPress needs. These are all companies that I believe in and use.
I’m just saying, if you expect entertainment on a daily basis, and even have the nerve to complain when things slip, then there is something seriously wrong with you.
Because do you expect to arrive at an airport and just catch a flight with no ticket, and no money? No. So don’t expect to arrive on a blog, pay nothing, and see no advertising.
Do we also want to fly for free now?
I actually wrote this because someone had mentioned on Twitter that the 2oceansvibe RSS Feed was not showing the whole stories, and you had to click onto the website to see the full story. Which makes sense, because if you’re simply reading an RSS feed, then your advertisers are getting no coverage. Greedy on Seths part? No. Just making sure that his brands get their coverage, which to me is more than fair enough.
It’s. Not. That. Difficult.To. Grasp.
Come on, lets support the local blogging community instead of taking what we want from it (Entertainment every day) and giving nothing back and criticizing.
Or am I being stupid here?
Read More Add a CommentDax from Relax-With-Dax posted a little something on Twitter today that I replied to, saying that this whole Chevron campaign was just corporate bulls%&t. Because let’s be honest, it is.
We always hear about oil companies and car companies going green, and I see it a lot with BMW. They have their Efficient Dynamics or whatever they’re calling it, but anyone driving a BMW will tell you that it is hardly fuel efficient. Sure on the open road it might do decently, but then again, most cars do pretty well on the open road. The fact is, you don’t drive from Hermanus to Cape Town to work every day, in perfect conditions with no traffic. You drive from within Cape Town, or whichever city you live in, and you get stuck in monumental amounts of traffic. A Smart car does well in these conditions.
A BMW? Hardly fuel efficient. A Mercedes? Hardly fuel efficient. Even with their ‘Blue Efficiency’ program. Remember, if you want to make something eco-friendly, just add in nice colors like blue and green and SHAZAM! You’re saving the world…
Look at the blue and green, look how eco-friendly it is!
And even when they are fuel efficient (compared to past models), they’re actually not fuel efficient. That’s like a fat person of 200kg’s saying they’re thin when they drop 50kg’s to 150kg’s. They’re still fat. In the same way that cars are still fuel guzzlers.
And these companies don’t care. If they REALLY cared, they’d stop selling sedans with 3L engines that basically need their own oil well pumping to sustain them. If they really cared they’d sell their cars with much smaller engines. But they don’t care. Well actually they do care…about profits. I want my car to be fuel efficient in that it uses 4-5litres per 100km’s around town. That would mean something to me. These other marketing scams can please just leave me alone, I’m not stupid. And nether are all of you.
The corporate world always strikes me as odd…with all the billions of dollars that they make, they never seem to make great inroads into improving the world. Because they’re too busy improving their small little bubble of a world. It is always up to the mavericks and the entrepeneurs to come in and make real change. Take Elon Musk as an example.
(On a side, don’t mention this name to anyone as STANDARD BANK CAVENDISH SQUARE. I was there last week asking for a verification code from PayPal on my statement. The teller had absolutely no idea what PayPal was. Astonishing)
Elon Musk is a South African born entrepreneur, who set up PayPal. He sold that and made a good few million dollars. He set Up Space X (Ok, not quite the most planet friendly move) and also Tesla Motors who are way ahead of anyone else when it comes to electric cars. If big oil companies like BP and Shell really wanted to change the world, they could invest some of their billions in electric car technology. They could, but they don’t care.
Because electric cars don’t run on their energy source. And in the future they may not even run on coal fired power stations, they may run on wind energy. And this is not oil, their business.
So they don’t care.
So whatever you read anywhere, in TIME magazine (Where oil companies love taking out adverts) or anywhere else, don’t believe it. Fuel companies tell you that their fuels are cleaner and more efficient, and car companies tell you that their cars are efficient.
Do your homework, because it’s a corporate world, designed to make you feel good (I’m going green!) while sweeping the real issues under the mat (The environment is dead, the oil is running out)
If oil companies really cared, they wouldn’t be pumping oil. They’d be building wind farms and solar plants.
Simple as that.
Read More Add a CommentI love reading books with quotes in them, or just searching for quotes on the internet. They’re short little bits of information that won’t necessarily change your life, well that is, unless you do something about them. It’s also easy to say things, and read quotes, but acting upon them is another story. The real world isn’t quite as easy as a quote, but I think the positive mindset they give you goes a long way anyway. Like The Secret, think of the things you want, visualize them, think positively. And in that regard, quotes from successful people are helpful.
I especially like this one, because sometimes in life you really feel as if you missed out on something that you will never be able to get back. Whether it’s a business opportunity or a relationship, nothing is gone forever. You just need to grab that next opportunity:
“Business opportunities are like buses, there’s always another one coming.” — Richard Branson
And this is also a great one from Steve jobs. Ever been scared to try something just because of what other people think? Or have you ever not tried something, because you’ve thought of a million different reasons why it won’t work?
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” — Steve Jobs
Remember, just think of how quickly a year goes by. Think of how quickly 2010 went by…its’ not over, but think of the World Cup and all the years build up to it. Time goes quickly. If you work from the age of 20 until 60, that’s only 40 years of work. That’s 40 more of these years…that’s not a lot if you really want to make a impact on the world. So take advantage of things and opportunities and try new things.
Then again, making an impact on the world isn’t really much, is it? As Gandhi said:
“Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it”
In the greater scheme of the world, this is true. There is an entire universe that doesn’t rely on us to make it work…but you know, you need to have fun and have reasons to keep on doing awesome things anyway. And that takes us back to Steve Jobs quote…

Read More Add a CommentSo as you all know, the miners in Chile were all cruising around in Oakley sunglasses upon their return to the surface of the earth. You know when you’re hungover and it’s dark inside, and then you go outside and your retina burns like hell? And you can’t see a thing? Now imagine being underground for two months! The light of day will literally be so blinding you’ll think you’re dying. So that is why the guys are wearing sunglasses, and Oakley in particular because of their impact protection, wrap around design and because their lenses have a special coating that resists water and oils so your vision never gets blurred. This from Oakley (Via) :
The rescue team in Chile is relying on Oakley eyewear to protect the miners’ eyes when they are brought back to the surface.
A few weeks ago, Oakley was approached by a Chilean journalist who was covering the rescue efforts and had recommended Oakley to the Chilean private health insurer, known as ACHS “Association Chilena de Seguridad”, for eyewear protection for the miners once they surfaced.
Based on their requirements and full product specifications, Oakley donated 35 pairs of Oakley Radar® with Black Iridium® lenses in Path™ and Range® lens shapes for the miners who will need the protection of Oakley sunglasses as their eyes return to normal. Minister of Mining Laurence Golborne (who is leading the rescue) has asked to wear one of the extra pairs to show solidarity.
About the product:
Oakley Radar sunglasses feature a single-lens shield that wraps around the eyes. This will give the miners optimal protection from sunlight — not just straight ahead but at the sides of their eyes.
The Radar frames will be matched with Oakley’s darkest lens. A Dark Grey base is combined with Black Iridium lens coating that balances light and reduces glare. The miners’ color perception may be reduced after the long period in dim light, and this lens is designed to maintain accurate color perception.
Two lens shapes (“Path” and “Range”) will be included with the interchangeable lens design. Both shapes provide excellent coverage, and the difference in shape will allow for variances in facial anatomy to give each miner the best possible sun blockage.
The miners’ eyes will be dilated, and this brings the risk of added UV exposure to delicate structures within the eye. Oakley Plutonite® lens material filters out 100% of all UVA, UVB, UVC and harmful blue light up to 400nm.
Radar lenses are enhanced with a hydrophobic/oleophobic coating that prevents water from leaving sheens that can obstruct vision. It also sheds mud and repels oils and dust. This will help keep the miners’ vision clear during rescue operations.
It will take extended time for the miners’ eyes to return to normal, and ordinary activities will come with added risk. For high-velocity and high-mass impact resistance, Radar sunglasses meet the uncompromising standards of the American National Standards Institute’s Z87.1 testing series.
Radar exceeds the Z87.1 standards for visual clarity and fidelity, so the miners will have the best possible vision as their eyes return to normal.
Our hearts are with the rescue team and the miners as we hope for a joyous end to the crisis.
And check this out from Adland.tv:
The glasses retail at $180, and 35 were donated to the effort, so $6300 was invested in what is projected to be worth $41 million in advertising time, as the images of the miners coming up is on practically every channel, worldwide.
Now I’m not from Chile, and I’m not a miner, but I’m also rocking a pair of Oakley Radars!
Just cruising!
Well mine are actually Herschelle Gibbs old ones, and a little more disco disco than the ones the miners are wearing.
They are an amazing pair of sunglasses for sports and activities where you need wrap around protection and the lenses are incredibly easy to keep clean. Mostly because they resist dirt in the first place.
Plus, you can wear them to the disco and look totally normal!
Disco disco!
Read More Add a CommentI’ve had quite a few people in my time look at me as if I’m gay, because of the passion in my voice when speaking about hair products. But it’s seriously not something I mess about with! Because I know how frustrating it is walking home with a tub of wax that has just set you back a gram (R350), and you try it and it doesn’t work for you at all. Now I always have a tricky time reviewing hair products because everyones hair is different. My hair is so messed up that one day a certain product works, another day a different one works. Some days I have to combine two different waxes in my hair to make me look half decent.
The fact is if you’re a guy with what I call chicks hair — straight, shiny, can grow it long without straightening it (Think Colin Farrell, Brad Pitt), then you can pretty much do what you want, cut your hair how you want, use whatever products you like and you’re still going to look good. You’re a lucky sonofabitch.
For the rest of us, life and hair products are one big struggle. Me, I have straight hair, but it’s very fine. So anything too greasy and it weights my hair down, anything too dry and I end up getting a little bit of a whitefro. I can’t grow my hair too long without looking like some sort of nerd, so it’s a tricky balance for me. Over the years I have perfected my hair styling techniques and products and have narrowed these products down to two:
Paul Mitchell Dry Wax.
Fudge Hair Shaper
Fudge Hair Shaper is my absolute favourite because it’s so damn tough and can make any style you want. As I say, some days my hair works, some days it doesn’t. I always use Fudge Hair Shaper to give my hair the style I want. If it is feeling a bit dry, I add some Paul Mitchell Dry Wax over it to make it look more natural with a matte finish.
But most of the time, Fudge Hair Shaper works perfectly on it’s own. If you have just normal, straight and shiny hair this stuff will change your life! You’ll be able to do absolutely anything with your hair and it will make you pull more chicks — guaranteed. Even on my fine, straight and sometime dry and terrible hair, this is the result of only Fudge Hair Shaper on it’s own:
I can deal with that!
The only problem is that you can’t buy it in Cape Town. It used to be available at that place in Canal Walk but they stopped selling it a while back. Luckily for me, I have an ebay account and take full advantage of it! I currently have two tubs of Fudge Hair Shaper, the Original and the Mint.
The mint is really rad and makes your hair smell fresh. It is essentially a paste, but not dry at all. You take a small amount, rub it in your hands and then just run it through your hair and create any style you want.
The benefits of Fudge Hair Shaper:
In fact, there are no negatives about this product, if there is a negative, it’s that my hair is so temperemental.
This is seriously the hair product you as a guy have been looking for. And I’m not saying this to sell the product because there is nothing in this for me. I’m simply doing this because I know what a minefield it is out there in the men’s hair product scene. I paid 11 pounds for my last mint tub of Fudge Hair shaper. This is the best men’s hair product on the market at the moment and I don’t see anything coming close to it in a long time.
With delivery and everything, you’re looking at paying around R200 for this on Ebay but remember, it lasts for ages. I use it every day and it normally lasts about three months per tub which is really amazing. You’ll just have to search through a few listings to find a seller that delivers to South Africa, but there are also a few. Once you’ve tried it, and you like it, then just order before your tub is finished because delivery normally takes around two weeks.
I always keep a spare tub in stock…so I know I’ll always look good!
Seriously, this is the hair product of your life. You won’t find it in Cape Town, and once you try it you won’t be telling any of your mates. Because you’ll look so good! But your mates will already know.
Because let’s be honest, who doesn’t read SLXS?
